Because the most important parts of your home are ones you may never see, we have worked hard to ensure our homes are building using high quality and durable materials to ensure your forever home is just that. We have done the tough work to ensure no stone is unturned or detail forgotten – so you can concentrate on making your new home truly your own.
Raising the Bar in Energy Efficiency
At Hillside, our homes use high-quality insulation and only the best and most energy efficient building materials available. For this reason, we have been able to achieve an energy efficiency rating that is 50% better than the national average, and 48% better than local building code requirements. That means not only are our homes helping to move the needle against climate change, but it also equates to real dollar savings on utility bills for our homeowners. That’s a win-win in our view.
Building Homes Green, and Better
In keeping with our commitment to building green, approximately 80% of our construction waste will be recycled. About 34% of this waste is clean lumber to be used at the McNeil Power Plant for waste-to-energy processes that help power the City of Burlington. Lumber, plastics, cardboard, and metals are collected on a weekly basis, co-mingled, and hauled off-site to be sorted and recycled.

Our new homes are designed to not only help cut down on carbon emissions, but make for happy, healthy homeowners, as well:
- HRV systems for air tightness and fresh, clean air throughout the home
- Low VOC paint and water-based stains
- Large, efficient windows bring in more natural light creating a healthier and happier interior environment
- Indoor/outdoor spaces, covered porches, and covered decks and patios extend living space without the need to heat/cool them
- Pre-wiring for solar and electric car charging
- Thoughtful land design that promotes walking, biking, and running that’s interconnected with other trails
- Reduced impervious surfaces
- Constructed wetlands to filter stormwater
- Efficient heating/cooling combined with energy storage to reduce utility bills and eliminate carbon emissions.
All new Hillside homes will meet rigorous efficiency and performance criteria as we target both Energy Star and DOE Zero Energy Home Ready (ZEHR) Certifications throughout the design, specification, and construction of each build. These certifications will result in lower energy demand, and improved thermal comfort.
Energy & Water Efficiency
All homes will be equipped for heating and cooling with all electric air source heat pumps, which can produce up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. Electricity used on site to power and heat homes will be 100% carbon free and 80% renewable, with Green Mountain Power targeting 100% of its power coming from renewable sources by 2030.
Each piece of our standard kitchen appliance package is Energy-Star rated, as is every LED light bulb we install. Additionally, through our partnership with Green Mountain Power, rooftop solar panels come standard in all our new homes.
Hillside East homes feature all low-flow and low-flush water fixtures, reducing water usage by around 3,400 gallons of water a year for the average home. We also use heat pump hot water heaters for added efficiency and annual savings.
Building Materials & Resources
Our kitchen cabinetry is certified by the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program, recognizing the practice and process of material growth, harvesting, and manufacturing as environmentally friendly.
Cold climates call for tight, heavy-insulated thermal envelopes. HRV systems are installed in every home to bring in fresh, healthy air.
By using low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, we reduce the potential harmful effects of VOCs inside your home. Low-e glass in our windows and exterior doors achieve an average U-value of less than 0.28, reducing heat and energy loss at each opening, making it easier and more efficient to both heat and cool our homes, as needed.
