O’Brien Farm Vision & History
Rich in tradition but evolving with the times, O’Brien Farm has long been an idyllic setting to raise a family.
Founded more than 65 years ago by native South Burlingtonians Leo Jr. and Daniel J. O’Brien, the O’Brien Brothers mission is to provide quality construction, superb customer service, and lasting value to our customers. We are South Burlington through and through, and we cannot wait to welcome you to our community and to our family property.
A vision realized
It has long been the vision of the O’Briens to build a family-oriented community on the land they loved for generations.
Hillside East is the second phase of a broader, mixed-use development and the next step in the stewardship of the beloved O’Brien Farm land. Over time, the neighborhood will include a variety of residential styles and access to employment, shopping, dining, and recreational opportunities—all within walking distance.
The O’Brien Farm history carries on at Hillside
Central to family life from the beginning
Leo and Dan’s father, Leo Sr., purchased the Old Farm Road property in 1944 to expand his cattle and farming business. Over the years, both brothers started and raised their families in neighboring houses on the crest of the hill separated only by the iconic red dairy barn. Leo and his wife raised six children in the original farmhouse. Dan and his wife followed suit next door, raising five children of their own. It wasn’t unusual to see one of the brothers driving a tractor trailing a hay wagon filled with laughing children.
Evolving with the times
As the Chittenden County area began to expand, O’Brien Brothers rose to the challenge and harnessed the opportunity to transition the business from cattle and farming to developing and building homes, apartments, and commercial spaces to help the community grow and thrive. The brothers fully transitioned out of farming in 1994, but their legacy and stewardship of the land continues as their original vision for community guides every aspect of the O’Brien Farm vision.
Carrying on a family legacy
The O’Brien Brothers set forth to build Hillside at O’Brien Farm, carrying on a legacy of community involvement, integrity, compassion, and hard work. Although Dan and Leo Jr. passed on in 2020 and 2021, respectively, their longtime vision to build properties that their children, grandchildren, and now great grandchildren can be proud of continues. With the Hillside East phase of the O’Brien Farm neighborhood, the brother’s legacy of Building Community Since 1958 is realized. The O’Brien family is pleased and proud to now invite others to live, raise their families, and create their own memories on the land that has meant so much to them for generations.
